Crocheted cozys transform any old jar into colorful and unique vases, pencil cups, or countertop storage for your crochet hooks.

This project is very flexible. I used recycled sari silk ribbon crocheted around talenti gelato containers and medium sized wide mouthed mason jars because that is what I had in my home already.  You can use whatever you have.

Fabric strips cut from old clothes or scraps leftover from quilting projects would work very well.  Any container that is round with straight sides could be used.

I almost made a cozy for a large oatmeal canister.   The only thing stopping me from making that choice was being unable to think of a purpose for a container of that size.  I want everything I make to be usefull as well as pretty.  The brightly colored cups that I did make sit on my desk, holding pens, scissors, and crochet hooks.

how the cozies were made:

I crocheted all of the jar cozies in continuous rounds (sometimes called a spiral).  Instead of joining my work at the end of each round, I tighten it and then stitch right into the space after the first stitch of the previous round.

I used a simple single crochet stitch because I wanted to make a dense fabric that would completely disguise the jars underneath.

A lacier stitch would have left the more of the container exposed, which would be very pretty if you were going to use your jars for tea lights.

Materials

  • scissors
  • recycled sari silk ribbon ( I used 85 grams of silk ribbon per jar cover)  My ribbon came over an inch thick so I cut it in half lengthwise which gave me twice the yardage to work with
  • mason jar or talenti gelato jar
  • size J crochet hook

guidelines

  • begin crocheting a flat circle by single crocheting in the round
  • continue crocheting, increasing as necessary to keep the circle flat
  • i keep the jar that I want to cover close so that can check the size of my circle against the bottom of the jar often
  • Once the circle is the same size as the jars bottom, it is time to work up the sides
  • continue crocheting around as you have, but do not increase any more.  this should cause your work to go straight up into a cylinder
  • i find it helpful to place my jar in my work and shape the crocheted fabric around it every so often
  • if my slipcover becomes too loose, I will decrease a couple stitches.  if it is too tight, I would increase.

you want the cozy to fit on the jar, well cozy.  if you have a tough time pulling your finished work over your container, you have done it right.  A slipcover that must be stretched and adjusted to fit, will stay snug.  the last thing you want is a droopy koozie.

  • I like to crochet about an inch longer, past the rim of the jar
  • once I reach that point, I tie off my yarn and sew the end of the strand against the back of my fabric (the hand sewing is optional.  Tying off is sufficient to end the crochet piece.  I just enjoy sewing that final end against my fabric.  It signifies the completion of my project and prevents me from continuing to fuss with my work.
