grey and yellow patchwork basket

reversible scrap patchwork basket made for project:quilting

about project:quilting

This week, while surfing online, I stumbled upon something that sounded like so much fun to me.

A competition based on the television show Project runway.  But this was a competition for quilters.  There are great prizes available each week and some amazing prizes for the end of the competition.  I made my basket to enter in the first project:quilting challenge of the season.  It's not too late to join in, there are still several upcoming challenges.

You are given one week to complete a challenge.  This week the assignment was to create something that was yellow and grey.

Please check out
the project quilting site if you are interested in joining.   Its not to late to compete to win prizes.  All are welcome to participate.

Everything you need to know you will find
at  the persimmon dreams website. It is there that all your questions will be answered.

The challenge: yellow and grey

The first step in completing the challenge was for me to dig through all my bags/drawers of fabric scraps to retrieve everything yellow and grey.  I was surprised by the amount of both colors that I had. These are not colors that I feel like I use very often.
Given the time limit to compete, I had to make a small project, but I wanted to make something useful, that I would actually use.
Digging through my disorganized scrap collection reminded me of my plan to organize and store all scraps by color.   I have been meaning to make color coded baskets to use in organizing my sewing scraps.
A scrap basket made from patchwork scraps would both help me on my goal towards getting organized and it fulfilled all the challenge guidelines.  A yellow scrap basket was the perfect project.

Patchwork basket

I used a free pattern that I found on  treasurie   The pattern was quite easy to follow and I finished the basket, including making my patchwork fabric in only a couple of hours. .

Instead of using just one fabric for my interior and another for my exterior, I made patchwork fabric, which I then cut to the 17 by 17 inch size pieces that I needed to make the storage basket.  I count this project as a success. I completed it I time to enter the competition and it is made from only scrap fabric.  I even used up an orphan block.

It only took me only one evening, and it was fun.  My goal is to challenge myself to make another ten or so baskets, one for each color of fabric scrap that I've collected.  I intend to use the same pattern for all, I was happy with the simplicity and adaptability of her basket. and I look forward to project: quilting's next challenge.
