five-point star foundation paper piecing sewing pattern (free, printable, pdf)

Plus, a roundup of the very best free five point star patterns. I scoured the internet so you dont have to.

I'm working on a medallion quilt with five-point stars.  When I was trying to find a pattern online to make those stars, I was dissatisfied with the options I was able to find.

I will share links at the bottom of this page to the best free star quilt block patterns I could find online.  You can decide which five-point star pattern that you like the best.

I decided to make my own foundation paper pieced star pattern.

This could be used in so many ways.  Off the top of my head, I think Christmas quilts, americana fourth of July projects, or a night sky sewing project. What about a nautical quilt or a woodland creatures under the night sky baby blanket? Or even a Hollywood walk of fame rug, featuring the names of your family members , each in their own star.  That could be very cool, you could even incorporate the handprints of the little ones into the walk of fame stars.  How cute would a glamorous themed child's  bedroom be?  The "Hollywood" stars would be great as a rug, quilt, or wall hanging.

But, those are all ideas for another time.  Today, I am just showing you the best free star patterns I found online and the free star pattern I wrote.

If you do use my pattern, please leave a comment down below.  I would be so excited to see how you incorporate the pattern into your project.

I have it in a free printable pdf download.    2.5" , 5", 6", 8", and 10" stars are all there in the fpp pattern download.

I hope that my pattern helps you make the five pointed star quilt block of your dreams.  I thought I would share some of the other free patterns I found online, so that you could see what method of star-making works best for you.

star patterns

  • The first pattern I found was on the website quilters cache. This was my favorite of the available free patterns I could find online.
  • This star is a little different.  It's not a printable pattern, but a way for you to design your own star pattern.  This is a well written, easy to follow tutorial. It comes from a blog post written in 2009.  She uses many different fabrics to make up her star, but you could update the look by substituting and using  one fabric for the star and only one for the background for a cleaner, more modern look.
  • The next five-pointed star pattern I was able to find was on the website field guide to quilts. This pattern tackles the five-point star differently than my pattern and quilters cache pattern. Some people may find this pattern easier.
  • The last free star pattern I wanted to share is a little bit different. It's called a Christmas star. A Christmas star has two pieces making up each point of the star. This allows for the option of making each point with two colors, but you don't have to. It's called a Christmas star, but if you use non-Christmassy colors, you could put this star on any kind of quilt or sewing project that requires a star.
